Crafting a Legacy: Brandon Voo’s Path in Classical Music

Discovering the Passion

At the age of eight, Brandon Voo had a transformative experience that set the course for his musical journey. It was during a screening of ‘The Living Daylights,’ where the soundtrack featured Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ‘Rococo Variations,’ that Brandon first encountered the enchanting sound of the cello. This moment left an indelible mark on his young mind, sparking a lifelong passion for string instruments.

Early Musical Path

"My parents initially signed me up for violin lessons," Brandon recalls. "However, a twist of fate led us away from the violin class. During the 1980s in Singapore, there were very few cello teachers, and we had no contacts for cello lessons. When my primary school orchestra acquired two cellos for the first time, I was chosen to play due to my height. If I had to choose all over again, I would still pick the cello."

Influences and Mentors

Brandon's musical journey was shaped by the influences of renowned cellists like Pierre Fournier, Mischa Maisky, and Daniil Shafran. His education was enriched by prominent cellists from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, including Koo Chiang, Hermina Ilano, Liu Peng, Wang Xiaolan, Ding Xiaofeng, and Nella Hunkins. His formative years saw him as a member of the Singapore Youth Orchestra, guided by Lim Soon Lee and Lim Yau, and during his National Service, he was mentored by Paul Sim in the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company. At the National University of Singapore Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Chan Tze Law further honed his understanding of professional arts organisations and their societal impact.

Performance Highlights

Reflecting on his performances, Brandon highlights his experience with Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major. "Learning and performing this work with the Singapore Youth Orchestra at 17 was a significant challenge. It demanded not only technical proficiency but also immense physical and musical stamina. Overcoming these hurdles was a testament to grit, hard work, and determination."

Words of Wisdom

Brandon’s advice to aspiring musicians is straightforward: "Always be on time and prepared. Take every opportunity seriously and do not fear rejection. Engaging in inspiring projects, meeting new people, and attending concerts keeps my passion for music alive."

Connection with Gramercy Music

Brandon’s connection with Gramercy Music is deeply rooted. "Gramercy Music's extensive collection of high-quality string instruments ensures that both beginners and professionals can find instruments that resonate with them. My students and I have been inspired by the instruments from Gramercy Music for many years."

Memorable Projects

A standout moment in Brandon's career was his participation in ‘Returning,’ a collaborative dance and music project featured at the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) 2015. Directed by Singapore dance pioneer and Cultural Medallion recipient Goh Lay Kuan, with music by Julian Wong, the performance was attended by then Minister of National Development (now Prime Minister of Singapore) Lawrence Wong. "I was the only cellist in an ensemble with traditional ethnic Chinese, Malay, and Indian musical instruments. This project challenged me to rethink the possibilities of the cello and broke boundaries for me as a performing musician. It reinforced my belief in the viability of music composed and performed by Singaporeans."

Perspectives on Classical Music

Addressing the evolving landscape of classical music, Brandon acknowledges the perception of it being outdated. "However, classical music with contemporary influences continues to be composed for films and video games, drawing new audiences. Concerts featuring such music have been successful, ensuring that the traditional symphony orchestra and the beauty of string instruments remain relevant."

Embracing Innovation

Brandon appreciates the integration of visual elements and technology in musical performances but maintains a critical perspective. "While these elements can revitalise music, it’s crucial that they do not overshadow the essence of music-making, which is the auditory experience."
