The Origin of Larsen Strings – 35 Years of Love and Passion
From a garage in Denmark to the world’s finest concert halls, the story of Larsen Strings is one of curiosity, craftsmanship and an unwavering devotion to music.
It all begins – and ends – with musicians and their music. For founder Laurits Th. Larsen, curiosity proved more powerful than knowledge. In 1990, when a promise to send 300 cello strings to an American friend could not be fulfilled, Laurits made the bold decision to try making them himself.
For 18 months, in the quiet of his family garage, he worked on an old winding machine, guided only by his violinist’s ear and the feedback of his cello colleagues in the South Denmark Philharmonic. Finally, he succeeded in creating a cello A string with a sound unlike anything else – warm, resonant and expressive.
Larsen Strings was born.

Not long afterwards, fate intervened. During a rehearsal with the orchestra, world-renowned cellist David Geringas snapped his A string. Laurits offered to help – if the conductor would allow him to cycle home to make one. An hour later he returned with two fresh strings. Geringas fitted one, played a few notes, and simply said: “I like this string.” He has played Larsen ever since.
Word of this new sound travelled quickly. Musicians across the world sought it out, drawn by its unique blend of warmth, projection and character. Through the 1990s, Larsen Strings grew from a one-man experiment into a thriving company – moving to a dedicated production site, investing in modern machinery and training a skilled team.
With the turn of the millennium came further refinement: scientific testing, advanced production methods and meticulous quality control, ensuring each string delivered the same signature sound, set after set, year after year.
Today, Larsen Strings are developed and tested in close collaboration with some of the finest musicians in the world. This direct connection ensures that each string enhances not only the listening experience but also the joy of performance.
From its beginnings in a Danish garage to stages around the globe, Larsen Strings remains true to the same guiding principle:
Music first, music last. Music is global – and so are we.
